This is a reminder of the events to take place December 10-12 in Pecos, Tx to highlight the Reeves County Detention Center, and the human rights abuses that took place there leading up to the Pecos Riot. See attached flyer and read below for more info.

This is an opportunity to unite with other families and organizations that are working to expose the broken immigration system and to ensure that our communities are not forgotten in the midst of political reform and human rights abuse and to continue our struggle for peace and respect for our communities. Family members of those in detention, or those lost in detention will speak as well as organizations.

If you are interested in supporting please call me at 956.207.2571. We will leave the Valley from (415 W. Mahl St., Edinburg, TX) Friday afternoon to arrive in San Antonio and then leave Saturday morning early to Pecos, TX. Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe:
December 12th: March and Vigil for Human Rights at the Reeves County Detention Center (Pecos, TX)
The Southwest Workers Union, ACLU of Texas, Grassroots Leadership, and National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights denounce the serious and widespread human rights abuses exacerbated by the inhumane conditions at the Reeves County Detention Center (RCDC) in Pecos, Texas. On December 12, 2009 we will draw attention to the devastating consequences of medical neglect and human rights abuses at the Reeves facility.

Our communities deserve sustainable jobs with dignity, not more prisons, especially those that target immigrants and people of color, dividing our community. We believe that it is not necessary to continue to intensify the militarization that divides and marginalizes our border communities stripping us of our most basic human rights, while draining resources for any real sustainable economic alternatives or educational programs for the development of our families and communities.

On December 12, 2009, Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, we will participate in an afternoon march and vigil at the Reeves County Detention Facility and the one year anniversary of the prisoner uprising, to shine a spotlight on RCDC and demand accountability.

We invite friends and families of those detained along with organizations concerned with human, civil and immigrant rights to join us.

If you would like to join us in this important event, contact Anayanse Garza, (956) 207-2571.

If you can’t make it, help us spread the word by forwarding this email, telling your friends, or tell us how you think you or your organization can help.
· You can also send a letter to BOP demanding accountability for the medical neglect and human rights abuses at RCDC and that it terminate its contract with Reeves County and the GEO group if they are not in compliance with the most basic detention standards.
· If you can’t make it to the vigil inPecos, join organizations at the GEO Group regional headquarters in New Braunfels on December 10th at 12pm. Organizations will present a letter to GEO officials asking GEO to comply with basic human rights standard or give up their contract with the BOP.
