Human Rights Advocates set to go to Court in El Centro
On Dec. 29. 2009 Filmmaker John Carlos Frey and founder of Citizens for All American Canal Safety, Dr. John Hunter will be in an El Centro, CA courthouse to hear charges brought against them for a humanitarian act of civil disobedience in the All American Canal.
On Nov. 17, 2009 both John Carlos Frey and Dr. John Hunter unlawfully entered the All American Canal and swam across to install a buoy system in an attempt to add safety features they believe the canal needs to mitigate death by drowning. The event was an act of civil disobedience aimed at raising awareness about the nearly 600 migrants who have drowned in the canal to date.
In August of 2008 the Imperial Irrigation District sent a letter to the San Diego County Water Authority suggesting a partnership between the two water agencies that benefit from the canal, to make the canal safe from drownings. Since that time 17 more people have drowned and no new safety features have been added as promised. Frey and Hunter took matters in their own hands to prove how simple and inexpensive it would be make the canal safe.
“We feel we have to take matters into our own hands. It took seven minutes to put the buoys across, and it’s taken the IID over 15 months to pretend to test the safety measures,” Frey said.
John Carlos Frey recently completed his latest film entitled, “The 800 Mile Wall,” which features the migrant drownings in the All American Canal and the reluctance of the Imperial Irrigation District and the San Diego County Water Authority to prevent drownings. Dr. John Hunter recently founded Citizens for All American Canal Safety to raise awareness about the deadly canal and put pressure on the respective water authorities to make it safe.
On December 29, 2009 at 8:30 AM John Carlos Frey and Dr. John Hunter will learn what penalties they will incur for their recent act of civil disobedience.
