WHAT: Visitation Program at the T. Don Hutto Residential Facility
Grassroots Leadership, Texans United for Families, and the UT Community Engagement Center have started visitation program at the T. Don Hutto Detention Facility in Taylor, which currently holds about 490 women. You may have heard about Hutto as a family detention facility. Fortunately, the families were released in September, but the former prison is now filled with women, many of whom are seeking asylum.
WHY: Hutto is the only female-only facility in the US. As community members, we feel it’s important to:
** show friendship and solidarity with the women detained there,
** resist the isolation of detention,
** monitor human rights at Hutto.
WHO: We want to include everyone who wants to participate, and we are particularly looking for people with fluency in languages other than English.
HOW: Attend the next orientation/training!
WHERE: UT Community Engagement Center, E 11th and San Marcos.
WHEN: March 25th, 5-6:30 pm. (PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE) Food will be provided.
Please RSVP to Lauren Martin to attend.
Hope to see you there,
Scholar In Residence, Grassroots Leadership | PhD Candidate, University of Kentucky
