AUSTIN: Visitation Program at the T. Don Hutto Family Residential Facility

Hello,

We’re looking for folks to join our new program.  Please contact Katie Cullather (katie.cullather@austin.utexas.edu) with any questions!

WHAT: Visitation Program at the T. Don Hutto Family Residential Facility

Grassroots Leadership, Texans United for Families, and the UT Community Engagement Center have started a visitation program at the T. Don Hutto Detention Facility in Taylor, which currently holds about 490 women.  You may have heard about Hutto as a family detention facility.  Fortunately, the families were released in September, but the former prison is now filled with women, most of whom are seeking asylum.

WHY: Hutto is the only female-only facility in the US. As community members, we feel it’s important to:
** show friendship and solidarity with the women detained there,
** resist the isolation of detention,
** monitor state of human rights at Hutto,
** refuse a detention system that labels humans as “illegal.”

WHO: We do have some organizing opportunities for English-only folks but for visitation, we are particularly looking for people with fluency in languages other than English.

HOW: Attend the next orientation/training!

WHERE: Community Engagement Center, E 11th and San Marcos.

WHEN: June 3rd, 5:30-7pm.  Food will be provided. RSVP to Katie Cullather (katie.cullather@austin.utexas.edu) to attend.
