The Hutto Visitation Program is a project of Grassroots Leadership, TUFF, and the UT Community Engagement Center. You may have heard about the T. Don Hutto detention facility as a family detention facility located close to Austin. Fortunately, the families were released late in 2009, but this for-profit private prison is now filled with immigrant women, most of whom are seeking asylum.
As community members, we feel the visitation program is a way to show friendship and solidarity with the women detained there, resist the isolation of detention, monitor human rights conditions at Hutto, and refuse a detention system that labels humans as "illegal."
